Dumb Things People Say about Preaching on Stewardship

We had just begun to pass the food around the table at Thanksgiving dinner last year when a friend of the family said, ‘The reason our church’s giving is good is because our pastor never preaches about money.’ I responded as casually as I could, ‘So you’re saying that your church’s giving is good because your pastor never preaches any of the countless biblical passages about money?’ She didn’t answer me and I let the conversation flow in other directions. But I was struck with the absurdity of her statement. Assuming that a church’s giving is good because the pastor neglects to preach any of the 2,350 Bible verses on money is like saying, ‘The reason our people are honest …

Dare to Achieve and Discover a Daring New You

I’m doing things differently in the New Year! For a start, I’m not going to undertake a million and one things with deadlines impossible to keep (though I suspect my interest in new projects will get the better of me). Many amazing and interesting things in this world grab my attention, making it easy for me to get sidetracked. My intention for the New Year is to transcend all previous successes and achieve things previously not considered. I’m curious to know where it will lead me (there’s that sidetracking issue again). It’s a scary thought but exciting all at once. Yes, next year sure will be different and amazing. If you’ve come through a year filled with boredom, sameness, heartache, …

Captivated

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, There’s a song which has dominated my attention for the past couple of weeks. From the first time I heard it, I began to play it so many times I’ve lost count. I think it’s a beautiful song, of course, but there’s so much more to it than that. The song is titled “Captivate Us.” It’s on a CD by the group Watermark. It’s a simple, quiet song with two voices and an acoustic guitar. I’m sharing the music with you here but I really want to suggest it not as a song, but as a prayer–a prayerful preparation for a conversation with our Heavenly Father. Not only have I listened to the song …

Belief, Opinion, Pride, Expectation

None of us can predict the future, but we can choose which paths that we take. What’s the big deal with people expecting you to do what everyone else does? Mathew verses 7-14 says that there are two paths. One more travelled and one less travelled. You think people would be excited for you to do something different. Belief. So your a bum when you go your own way, but then suddenly your succesful when you make something of yourself. It’s the dollar that talks soo loudly these days. It’s terribly distracting. Like you’re trying to keep things low profile, but it’s turning up the volume with “Black or White” on. Your parents want you to be quiet. And It’s …

Bad Company Corrupts Good Character

In 1 Corinthians 15:33, Paul wrote: “Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.” This statement should be your guiding light when selecting your next roommates. In the same way that your family influenced you growing up, the people you live with now will also change the way you speak, act and think. This is great news if you pick solid, Christian roommates who will help you to grow. Proverbs 27:17 says that “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” However, the influence of your roommates can also corrupt your good character according to the verse from 1 Corinthians. Rather than being sharpened, you can be slowly whittled away. The worst part is, this happens slowly and …
